Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Palm-like trees, height unknown.

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades narrowly elliptic, blades ca. 34 cm long, ca. 4.5 cm wide. Apex acuminate. Base cuneate. Upper surfaces green, glabrous; lower surfaces pale green, pubescent along the midrib and veins. Margins undulate and callose–denticulate. Petioles 3–4 cm long. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers sessile on peduncles 60–70 mm long. Flowers bisexual (perfect). Calyx lobes triangular in fruit, 4–5 mm long. Corolla unknown. Stamens unknown. Ovary inferior, 2-celled; ovule placentation axile; stigma 2-lobed, wet or dry, appressed and nonreceptive as the style grows through the anther tube, pushing out the pollen, after which the stigmas spread apart and become receptive.

Fruit: Berries ovoid; ca. 12 mm wide; crowned by the persistent calyx lobes. Seeds numerous.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Known only from the type (Hillebrand s.n. B; presumably destroyed) collected in the Kohala Mountains; Hawai'i.
